Profile | Early Beginnings

Adnan Ahmed Yousif Abdulmalik was born on August 19th 1957 in the city of Al Muharraq in the Kingdom of Bahrain. “Muharraq” in Arabic means “the place of ashes” and the origins of the city go back five thousand years to the age of the Dilmun civilization. The area on which the present city is built came into prominence during the era of the Tylos, when the region came under the influence of the Selucid Greeks. By the 5th century AD it had become a major centre for Nestorian Christianity. The city of Muharraq was formally established in the 17th century and today evidences a rich tapestry of ancient heritage and culture. The city’s inhabitants have traditionally been seafarers and traders. With such antecedents, Adnan’s early upbringing was greatly influenced by traditional values, later leavened by the new ideas and philosophies which the second half of the 20th century brought to Bahrain. Adnan attended middle and high school in Muharraq at the Al Hedaya school, displaying all-round skills by excelling in academics, the fine arts and sport – swimming being his forte.
